STUDY SKILLS SUGGESTIONS AND IMPORTANT POINTS FOR SUCCESS:

  1. Organize yourself! Use your planner and write down each homework assignment, each period. Use the webpage to help plan your studying for the week.  Remember: it's a guideline- it's not written in stone.
  2. Find a quiet place at home where you can study without distraction.  Texting and studying do not mix!  Look over your week and designate homework time each afternoon or evening.  Then, do homework during this time.   Focus.
  3. Don't fall behind.  Take short breaks.  This is the single most significant factor that causes difficulty for freshmen.   The brain must build new memory, which means small chunks of study.  Ten minutes over 6 days is MUCH better than 60 minutes in 1 day!  The 'spacing effect' has been proved for decades-- space your studying out over days-- One night cramming will not work in World Civ.
  4. Homework counts in Holmdel High School.  If  you do not do your homework, your grades will suffer.  There is no last minute 'extra credit'.
  5. Memory is built during REM sleep.  The bulk of your REM sleep occurs after 6-7 CONSECUTIVE HOURS of sleep. Then, the cycle repeats from REM to other stages, back to REM. Staying up all night studying actually undermines your ability to remember.  GET at least 8 hours sleep and watch your grades improve!!
  6. World Civ is a requirement for GRADUATION
  7. A final "A" average in World Civ is required if you plan to go on to AP US History, Pt. I Sophomore year, Pt. 2 Junior year.   I do not change grades You earn your grade starting now.

TAKING NOTES IN CLASS:

  1. Sit close to the front of the class to minimize distractions if you need this help.
  2. Be prepared to keep your notes neat and organized. Use a separate spiral-bound notebook for each subject, or  use dividers in your loose-leaf notebook to make separate sections for each subject.
  3. Begin each note taking session at the top of a fresh page or  leave a space. Start by writing down the date and topicKeep a doodle page separate from your notes ifyou must doogle- they distract when trying to study.
  4. Do not try to write down everything the teacher says.  Record as many facts and ideas as you can. Mark important facts or main ideas with an *asterisk* or star or underline them.  Skip lines between ideas.
  5. Write down EXAMPLES your teacher uses-- these help you figure out what concepts mean later!!
  6. Use short sentences and phrases and easily remembered abbreviations and symbols. Some commonly used abbreviations and symbols are:
    • eg (for example)
    • w/ (with)
    • w/o (without)
    • &, + (and)
    • = (equals, is)
  7. Write clearly, and leave lots of blank space in the left margin or between ideas in case you need to add information later.
  8. Read over your notes as soon as you can after class. If there is anything you don't understand, ask the teacher at the next class or come to afterschool help.
