AP PSYCHOLOGY
SEPTEMBER 2011

WELCOME TO AP PSYCHOLOGY!
You have chosen to take this college-level academic course that will challenge you.  From day one, we will be preparing for the AP Exam, scheduled to be taken at noon on May 7, 2012 Everything is set up to help you succeed.  This webpage will help you to keep up with classwork, homework, and assignment deadlines, even when you are absentDO NOT FALL BEHIND I update bi-weekly and will try to keep to this schedule, barring the unforeseen.  Unit tests will come up VERY quickly, so please keep on top of things.

IF YOU HAVE NOT GOTTEN THE SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS- click here-- and do so now!  We will hit the ground running in September.  There will be no time for you to do the work then.

I have 'surfed the net ' quite a bit, collecting the best of the psychology sites for you.  Use these links to help you in your investigation of human behavior and to deepen your comprehension of topics covered in class.  Some of the links are FUN!  Feel free to explore.  It is vital to keep up with the unit reading and outlining, as the content builds on upon what was learned previously.  Scroll down the webpage for yearlong test date information and how to write a PRS directions.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to talk to me;  this is your responsibility.  Extra help will be on Mondays and Thursdays in Room 402 or the INFOCenter.  Please check with me.

Please go to the link for the Society of Neuroscience, if you have not done so already.  Download the booklet "Brain Facts"  Read it, it's really awesome (if you like neuroscience). We will use it during Unit 3 and at other points during the yearSee Jane Run is a suggested reading and extra credit (There is not a lot of extra credit in an AP class). It is a novel, perfect for the beach or breaks.  ENJOY it!     I'm looking forward to a great year in AP Psych
.

WRITING A (PRS) Personal Response Section Essay
THERE IS NO PRS FOR UNIT 1 or 2 -
The concepts here will be integrated into the other units as we progress.

Directions:  The AP Psychology exam100 multiple choice questions worth 2/3rd of your grade and 2 essay questions that comprise 1/3 of your score.
Our class unit tests are worth 100 points:
Multiple choice = 65 points;    PRS essay = 35 points

1. You will have a choice of questions. Pick ONE question, which may have multiple parts.  Most will be set up like multiple choice questions.  If "A" is not the correct answer, explain why it is not the correct answer.   If "B" is the correct answer, emphasize it!.  Explain the major psychological studies associated with the topic. Use the vocabulary associated wit these concepts.  Use the psychologist's name and explain the conclusion of the research.  Why is it important research?

2. Respond in the order presented.  Do not make me or the AP scorers search for your answer. You will lose points.  Be succinct.  Do not be repetitive.  I repeat, do not be repetitive!

3. Explain the research from the text AND class in your answer.  This is not optional!
  Example:
"As demonstrated in Pavlov's experiment using dogs and salivation (1912),  classical conditioning is more effective if the reward  comes immediately following the unconditioned stimulus. In this case, the reward was meat powder.  Other examples  of reward of this type may include lollipops, ice cream, and praise."

4. Do not include a works cited or bibliography. This is not a research paper. Do not cite your textbook. You will not remember these details writing  the AP exam essays  (2 essays - 1/3rd of the AP Exam score). By April, you will have 9 or 10 major essays on every major topic in general psychology as study tools  for the AP exam.  This will make you very happy if you have included the  research study, psychologists, and a description of the experiment in the essay.

5. Unit 13 and 14 PRSs will be written IN class.  You will not have the  questions prior to class.  This is to practice for the AP exam.

6. DestressorYou will receive ONE PRS pass.  This permits you to skip writing one PRS during the year without penalty. Things happen.

However, part of the objective test will now be worth 2 points each to make up the 34 points of the essay (you get 1 point for luck).  Choose wisely when deciding when to use the pass. It should be a destressor, not a stressor!

IF YOU LOSE IT, YOU USED IT
